Still, it all added to the restaurant”s playful, quirky appeal. The Panda Inn”s eclectic decor ranged from exquisite paintings to unusual collections of items displayed behind overhead lighting panels - we understood the bamboo pieces, Chinese spoons and mahjong tiles but the playing cards and tennis balls puzzled us a bit. Slightly oily but very crisp and flavorful, the rolls were served with three housemade condiments: eye-watering hot mustard, smoky peanut sauce and unusually good sweet-and-sour sauce. The bright, smooth Tsingtao was perfect with our too-hot-to-handle spring rolls. Keiko quickly returned with our beer, pouring it into super-frosty mugs that created little flecks of ice in the golden liquid. We each chose entrees starred as “hot and spicy,” Panda Fish with Long Green Beans $9.90 and Gong Bao Shrimp $12.50. Our server, Keiko, who has been with the restaurant 13 years, took our orders for Tsingtao Beer $3.75, Spring Rolls $4.90 and Sizzling Rice Soup $9.90. She seated us at a side table where we had no trouble hearing each other, even when the restaurant became quite busy. We asked for a quiet spot and the gracious hostess, who turned out to be co-owner Wynnsome Chau, led us through a large room, ingeniously divided by decorated screens into several areas. A smiling woman immediately appeared, saying approvingly, “That”s what the bell is for!” No host was apparent when we arrived, but my friend Tracy spotted a silver bell labeled “Ring for Service” and gave it a hearty jangle. The tiny foyer is enthusiastically decorated with carvings, teapots, a gong and panda-themed photos and tchotchkes. Instead, take the Rio del Mar exit to Deer Park Shopping Center, drive almost to the end near CVS and look for steps leading up to this cheerful Chinese restaurant, which has been operating here since 1981.
